D-Day
Not seen a thread about it so why not.

Probably one of the most important days in world history, June 6th 1944.

Anyone ever been to the beaches there?

Anyone got a grandparent or something with any stories?

Anyone got any good documentary recommendations or anything on it?

I have an Uncle buried in a village cemetery just outside Caen. RAF, died 29th June 1944 age 22.. His is the only military grave in what is still designated as a Commonwealth War Grave cemetery and is used by the village as the centrepiece of their Armistice day services.

4% of the beach at Normandy is made up of shrapnel from that one battle.

Bit mental really and still gives me shivers thinking about it.

Yep carried out by the SS Das Reich division. Strange thing is the guy that ordered it is buried at La Cambe wouldn't have thought the French would have put up with that. Michael Wittman is also buried there (Villers Bocage).

I've been there; the village is as was at the time of the massacre. All the cars, bicycles, burnt out buildings etc are untouched. Amazing place.

Very sad.

It's well worth visiting Aromanches and the 360 degree cinema. Also one of the many war cemetaries.

Very moving and humbling.

Oradour Sur Glane?

That's where the Germans massacred a whole village wasn't it?

I believe the French have kept it as it was?

Re: D-Day
Been to the D-Day beaches about 5 times now and try to see something new each time. Only beach I haven't been to is Juno but will get round to it at some point. I drive from Calais and normally take a few friends from work and stay at Bayeux. Last year for a change we went to Ypres as I've never visited ant WW1 sites before.

Getting back to Normandy normally take in Pegasus, Melville and Sword. We then drive onto Bayeux and drive around the American sites the following day. Next on my tick list is the bridge at La Fiere and a bit further out Oradour Sur Glane.

Best sites in no particular order: Melville,Dean Man's corner, Pegsus Bridge,Maisy Battery, Pointe Du Hoc,Omaha, Utah, Hillman, Ste Mere Eglise & La Cambe,American Cemetary as well the Commonweath Cemetaries. Very humbling and worth doing.

Most of the American kids I taught were convinced it was a purely US operation.
Some could be convinced that the British may have been involved,
None would believe that a third of the beaches were attacked by Canadian forces

Have to check it out.

I know that elements of the 12th SS Panzer Divisor (the Hitler Jugend Division, the ones who committed the Ardenne Abbey massacre) were there and there might have been some unrecorded retaliations for that.
